Research Interests
The main scientific research interests of the Marine Biochemistry Laboratory focuses on:
- Isolation and identification of compounds synthesised by microorganisms (peptides, pigments, siderophores);
- Microorganisms (cyanobacteria and algae) as a source of high added value products – assessment of the biological activity of compounds synthesized by microorganisms against cancer cell lines, enzymes;
- Allopathic interactions between phytoplankton organisms;
- Cyanobacterial and algal biotoxins;
- The effect of abiotic factors on ecophysiological processes occurring in microbial cells such as: growth, photosynthesis, pigment composition and transport of metals, mainly iron, through cell membranes.
The Marine Biochemistry Laboratory also maintains a culture collection of microorganisms, and their cultivation for biomass.
