The
research conducted in Biochemistry Laboratory concentrate on the following
major topics:
-
Isolation
and determination of biologically active substances in biota and sea water
of the Baltic Sea (surface, bottom, near bottom sea water and sediment
pore water):
- isolation and identification
of siderophore-like substances, natural iron chelators,
- isolation and identification
of carotenoids in marine biota, as indicator of dietary habits of zooplankton
- isolation and characterization
of proteins, at present ferritin-type, from blue mussel Mytilus edulis
-
Abiotic factors influencing
ecophysiological processes of phytoplankton cells – growth, photosynthesis,
composition and contents of pigments, and transport of metal ions through
cell membranes, at present iron
-
Study of bioaccumulation
of organic contaminatns in aquatic organisms
-
Development and maintenance
of an algal culture collection including
Chlorella vulgaris (A1-76)
Dictyosphaerium pulchellum
(C2-79)
Scenedesmus armatus (B1-76)
Scenedesmus microspina
(B2-76)
which represent
axenic cultures of the green algae isolated from the Baltic Sea.
