The research activity of the Ocean and Atmosphere Numerical Modelling Laboratory is directed on the development of physical processes in the numerical ocean models. Although our main goal is focused on the oceans and seas, we are also interested in physical processes in the modeling of ice and atmosphere. During the last decades, the development of computer technology has resulted in the increased interest in the large-scale modeling. Horizontal and vertical resolution of the models have increased furthermore, also parameterizations have been developed in order to obtain the desired resolution.

Currently, we are working on the main three models: coupled ice-ocean model for regional domains, global ocean model with embedded Moore ecosystem model, MIKE by DHI (Software for water environments developed by www.mikebydhi.com) and the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF). The coupled ice-ocean model was configured for the Pan-Arctic domain and the Baltic Sea. It is based on the Community Earth System Model (CESM - developed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research - UCAR and National Centre for Atmospheric Research - NCAR, http://www2.cesm.ucar.edu/. Our configurations are not default in the CESM releases. We adopted it to our domains ourselves. The WRF model is used as a quick tool for small regional forecasts and also as re-analysis tool for dynamical downscaling from global forecasting system to local resolution. For example it was used for making weather forecast for the Polish Olympic Sailing Team (London/Weymouth, August 2012). MIKE by DHI is our newer tool and we are trying to adopt it for small domains. We are trying to make hydrodynamical tool for two Svalbard fjords: Hornsund and Kongsfjord.

The main area of our investigations is included in the strategic directions of the IO PAN's activity.
