Distinguishing characteristics
Head with cephalic plate and cephalic rim with a smooth margin and lateral notches only.
Pygidial plate oval to rounded with lateral notches and a smooth dorsal margin.

Species description
Body cylindrical and strong, head with a cephalic plate. Cephalic plate clearly longer than wide, with a raised median keel. Cephalic rim with a smooth margin and lateral notches only. 19 chaetigers. Notopodia small, bud-like, neuropodia are tori. Three types of capillary chaetae: strongly bent with smooth wings, straight, narrow and with smooth wings, long, thin, finely denticulate. Neurochaetae absent from the first chaetiger, two posterior segments without chaetae. Pygidium with an oval to rounded plate with a smooth dorsal margin, the ventral margins smooth, wavy or jagged. Tube - cylindrical with a circular cross-section. Covered with mud, fine sand or foraminiferans.

Size
Up to 110 mm for 19 chaetigers.

Color
Anterior body with brown to black-brown irregular pigment stains. Posterior body half yellowish-grey.

Habitat
Found in the littoral and sublittoral zones; prefers mud, sand and gravel substrate. From upper sublittoral, 8 m down to 4400 m deep.
Mobility
Sedentary.

Feeding
Surface deposit feeder.
Grazer.

Life cycle

Distribution
Cosmopolitan. North Sea, Skagerrak, Kattegat up to middle Ă–resund and Big Belt.
