Department of Marine Ecology IO PAS consists of two parts: the chemical part - Marine Pollution Laboratory deals with the advanced methods of chemical analyses of the sea water and sediment. The ecological part (Arctic Ecology Group) of the deaprtment works on comparative field ecology. The climate - related patternsof biodiversity, communities and population structure are studied in Baltic,European Arctic Seas and recently in tropical areas.

• functioning of simple ecosystems in different climatic zones - latitudinal gradients in biodiversity and productivity
• higher trophic levels in marine food webs
• advanced methods of pollutions analyse in marine environment
• study of ecology of the Arctic Seas
• ecological mapping of Svalbard coasts
• phytoplankton distribution, dynamics of development.
• chlorophyll and other pigments determination in marine sediments - analyse methods
