Baltic Sea is one of the largest brackish waters of the world and the Hel peninsula lies towards the south of it along the Polish Baltic coast. The Baltic coast has very little tidal influence and water level fluctuations are controlled primarily by wind induced seiches.
The Hel Peninsula is a unique creation of nature. Its geomorphologic and ecological dynamics are far from simple and accordingly, investigators have put effort to understand the intricate natural processes operative in this zone.
The Puck Bay is a calm shallow productive zone which is intensively used for navigation, port and fishing activities. The Hel Peninsula enhances the utility of the Bay by giving a protective coverage to it.
The study site for the COSA project is located on the Small beach at Hel directly in front of the Hel Township.
